What do you do at St. Paul’s?
I am the Senior Pastor and primary sidewalk greeter.
How big is your family?
Ann and I have three adult children. Chris is an English teacher. Joe is a microbiologist. he is married to Melissa and they have a son, JT. Sara is a psychiatric social worker. She and Dan are newlyweds. Ann is Director of Finance at ScriptSave.
My extended family lives in Mississippi and I am blessed that Addison, Jackson and Brendan McCarty consider me their eccentric uncle!
What do you do for fun?
I run and especially enjoy running on trails and entering the occasional ultramarathon. I also ride a variety of bicycles. I am a somewhat compulsive reader. I enjoy many magazines and I am always reading several books.
What’s your favorite kind of music?
I like the best of every genre of music. I am often introduced to new music by inviting friends to create a playlist that I can listen to while I run. Perhaps you will leave a CD of your favorites in my box in the office!
Who are your favorite authors/books?
I enjoy adventure travel writing as well as a wide variety of novels, history historical fiction. I often select an author or topic and explore it thoroughly for quite some time before I move on to something new.
While I find all reading a stimulus to my faith I read extensively from the monastic tradition. I find that this introduces me to a way of living and thinking that is so outside the normative boundaries of my daily life that I am challenged to joyfully re-evaluate how I find God alive in the world.
What do you get at Starbucks?
The barista often gets to decide. I usually go to the same Starbucks and while they remember me, they only think they remember my order. I do not get the same thing every time so when they smile and say, “Oh yes, you want a ____” I smile and say, “Perfect, thanks for remembering!”
